Sunday's Gospel- 17th May

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

15 ‘If you love me, you will keep[a] my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate,[b] to be with you for ever. 17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in[c] you.

18 ‘I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.’

This Gospel reading comes a few days before the celebration of  Ascension Day, when Jesus' return to Heaven is remembered. In it, Jesus teaches his followers that he will be leaving them, but they won't be alone. He will continue to be with them through the Holy Spirit.

If you love me, you will keep[a] my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate (the Holy Spirit),[b] to be with you for ever

A Chicken and Egg Situation - Uchenna Kalu-Uduma - Medium

Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?  Is it keeping the commandments that brings us closer to god, or does being closer to God help us to keep them?

It is the Holy Spirit that brings us close to God and helps us to keep the commandments. The most important commandment  Jesus gave us to keep was "love one another, as i have loved you".

Look out of the window- can you see the leaves on the trees moving? The spirit is like the wind, we cannot see the wind, but we can see the and feel the effects of it.

Weather warning in place as wind and rain batter the west - Galway ...

So it is with the Holy Spirit,: we can experience Jesus' presence when we show love to those around us and receive this same love from others. The Spirit helps us to show this love, which  can be a daily challenge- possibly made worse by the fact that we are forced to stay indoors and spend more time with our families. Boredom or frustration are understandable, and trying to carry out school work can lead to stress in the home.

If you are feeling stressed or losing patience - say a little prayer; ask Jesus to send His spirit (the Holy Spirit) to help you through the day.
