Sunday's Gospel -10th May

 John 14: 1-7, 12

  Jesus said to his disciples,

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God still and trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father's house. If there were not, I should have told you. I am going now to prepare a place for you, and after I have gone to prepare you a place,  I shall return to take you with me, so that where I am, you will be too. You know the way to the place I am going."

Thomas said, "Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"

Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. no one can come to the Father except through me. If you know me, you know my Father too. From this moment, you know him and have seen him.

……..I tell you most solemnly, whoever believes in me, will perform the same works that I do myself, he will perform even greater works, because I am going to my Father"

This Gospel reading can be especially comforting to us in the midst of the Covid-19 lockdown. For families staying at home, the thought of a home with many rooms is probably particularly appealing!

Jesus makes it clear that he is the way to God the Father and God's presence in the world. If the disciples have seen Jesus, they have seen God. He also suggests that once he has gone back to his Father, then his power will be at work in the disciples. This is a hint that the Holy Spirit will equip the disciples with the power to do the same work- preaching and  performing miracles-as Jesus did. This Gospel provides us with Hope for the future (the house with many rooms) and the promise of strength for today, through the Spirit, so that we can know that we can rely on Jesus to give us strength hen we face challenges. Also, his spirit, the Holy Spirit can help us to follow in his footsteps.
